Robots are no less visually appealing than the best of Pixar's digital animation products (or Dreamworks). The landscapes are amazing, the characters are intricately folded, there are many exciting activities, and Robin Williams helps with a laugh of the stomach. Despite these positive qualities, robots never seem more than reasonably entertaining. In fact, it more often resembles a video game template (with remote interactivity in movie theaters - it will no doubt be restored for X-Box and PlayStation 2 discs) than a fully realized movie. It does not take long to uncover the culprit for the lack of inspiration from robots. The pedestrian area is oriented directly at five-year-olds.

The screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babalu Mandel were never known for their subtlety (even their best work - Splash, Parenthood and Their Own League - uses shameless manipulations). In Robots, they led the audience into meaninglessness with the help of the film. The only way that the viewer could get out of the robots without realizing the importance of following his dream was if the dream caught this viewer a few minutes before the start of the film. This approach is suitable for children; adults will find it tiring.

Leave it to Robin Williams to save the day. Although his vocal performance does not quite correspond to the standard set by him in Aladdin, it is only one notch. It brings life and energy to robots. Most Williams' dialogs have an improvisational quality - as if they told him the essence of his dialogue, but they gave him carte blanche regarding the choice and delivery of the word. The result is a sense of spontaneity. We are never sure what Williams' animated alter ego will say or do next. This element of the film will be of interest to adults long after the storyline has shifted to autopilot. Unfortunately, in terms of vocal performances, Williams is the only actor worth mentioning. None of his film colleagues - Ewan McGregor, Holly Berry, Drew Kerry, Jim Broadbent, Mel Brooks or Greg Kinnear - offer anything more memorable than the general idea. They read their lines, but do not do more. Next to them, Williams seems fresher than he could have in more favorable circumstances.

This story is a familiar tale: a boy leaves home to fulfill his dreams, and ultimately accomplishes great things. This is Pinocchio crossed with the Wizard of Oz. In this case, the boy turns out to be a robot named Rodney Copperbott (McGregor's voice), an “outmode” (an older, less streamlined model) who leaves the sleepy village of Rivet Town for the city of Robot City. His goal is to find Bigveld (Mel Brooks), his hero. But when he arrives, Rodney finds out that Bigveld has disappeared and things are controlled by the smooth, vain Phineas T. Ratchet (Greg Kinnear) and his wicked mother, like the spider Madame Gasket (Jim Broadbent). These two dubious robots pursue Hitler’s plan to eliminate all obsolete conditions, so the surviving population of “upgrades” is much like a rattle (however, the reasons for this are more likely to be greed than ethnic cleansing). With the help of some new friends, including the irrepressible Fender (Williams) and the binding love interest of Cappie (Halle Berry), Rodney sets off in search of Bigveld and saving the city from Ratchet's clutches.

If the plot does not capture you, then the film will look. Directed by Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha, who were responsible for the Ice Age (by far the least impressive of digital animation features), they created a world of robots to arouse the imagination. With sets that look like a wild hybrid of early illustrations on the covers of Amazing Stories, and crazy sets of fitters, Robots enhances the sweetness effect at an amazing level. Each of the robots is unique and clearly not developed using the rule “form follows function”. (Many seem to have been inspired by Star Wars droids.) Vibrant colors riot. There are plenty of inventions by Rub Goldberg, they appear everywhere - from the city transport system to playing dominoes in the Bigveld monastery. The ooo / aaa coefficient of robots is greater than that of many of its digital animated genera, but it only partially compensates for the emptiness of history and the lifelessness of all characters, except one.

The film is replete with content that guarantees protection from boredom for those with little attention. The sequence of actions occurs approximately every five to ten minutes (most of which resemble animated roller coaster walks). There are many face-offs of pop culture, such as the voice of James Earl Jones: "Strength is strong." (For these seven words, Jones earns a place in the opening credits.) And, of course, there is humor. 90% of this comes from Williams (and a few lines are not in color, although the insinuation will go to the heads of most young viewers), but there are such things as the mandatory main product of children-oriented films: a farting joke. And many jokes come at the expense of a character named "Aunt Fanny."

If you have children, you have little chance of avoiding watching this movie, and when you go, you are likely to enjoy it. But the "Robots" are not one of those that do not miss animated digital films that are suitable for both adults and children. Shrek's travels and the adventures of the Incredible (to name just two) put the robots to shame. This is a tolerable, one-time springtime entertainment, and even more desirable because of the lack of family-friendly films that are currently available in movie theaters. Robots are not just spare parts, but some sprockets and rivets are missing.

It's good?

Just like his dear hero Rodney, this film is composed of parts that sound hand in hand (as in his classic story about outdogs), but it has a lot of heart. This helps to turn it into something irresistibly fresh and completely delightful. Robots are brilliantly presented by illustrator William Joyce, and each of their shots is filled with incredibly original details, each of which is delightfully witty, surprisingly fantastic and completely logical.

The film has excitement, instant witchcraft and music that will make you want to get up and dance. As often in animation, the actors give pleasant, but not very distinctive voices, and comedians steal the show. Robin Williams, Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge - Highlights. But the star here is design, the same part of the story as the plot and characters. All this is combined into a story that works at every level, with something for every age, with silly humor, a cunning pun, cunning satire, charming characters and, most rare, a story that is not only warming, but also significant.
